Capacity Building of Community-Based Organizations
NNTP is committed to empowering transgender community-based organizations (CBOs) in our network to enhance their capacity and effectiveness in serving transgender communities.
Through targeted interventions, NNTP aims to:
-
Strengthen Governance and Institutional Capacity: Provide training and support on organizational governance, leadership development, and strategic planning to ensure CBOs are well-managed and sustainable.
-
Enhance Project Management: Equip CBO staff with the necessary skills to effectively manage projects, including budgeting, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting.
-
Promote Sustainable Operations: Assist CBOs in developing sustainable funding models and diversifying their revenue streams to reduce reliance on external grants.
-
Foster Partnerships and Collaboration: Facilitate partnerships between CBOs and government agencies, corporations, and other stakeholders to enhance their reach and impact.
Through NNTP's recent capacity-building efforts, 8 regional CBOs implemented their first ever projects. Three of these CBOs have successfully developed sustainable funding models and are now implementing projects funded by Azim Premiji and Omega in the states of Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
By investing in the capacity of CBOs, NNTP aims to empower them to become more self-sufficient, effective, and sustainable in their efforts to serve transgender communities. These strengthened CBOs are better equipped to address the diverse needs of transgender individuals and create lasting positive change.

Access to Social Entitlements and Schemes
Transgender individuals in India face significant barriers in accessing their legal identity, which limits their opportunities and perpetuates discrimination. Identity cards are crucial for accessing essential services and participating fully in society, yet many transgender individuals struggle to obtain them due to bureaucratic hurdles and lack of awareness.
To address this challenge, NNTP focuses on:
-
Offering direct support to transgender individuals in the registration process, simplifying the procedures and ensuring access to necessary documentation.
-
Conducting awareness campaigns to educate transgender individuals about their rights and the importance of obtaining identity cards.
-
Working with government agencies to streamline the registration process and eliminate discriminatory practices.
Through our initiatives, we have successfully facilitated access for over 1600 transgender individuals in obtaining their identity cards between February and June 2024.
With your support, we aim to expand our reach and help a larger number of transgender individuals obtain their identity cards, enabling them to access essential services and participate fully in society.

Advocacy and Sensitization
One of the key challenges faced by transgender communities is the lack of awareness about their rights and the available resources. Ensuring a regular flow of quality information to community-based organizations (CBOs) will empower them to effectively educate and support transgender individuals they serve. Raising awareness among both government authorities and the general public is crucial for creating a more inclusive and accepting society.
NNTP will undertake sensitization programs to educate stakeholders about transgender issues, dispel myths, and promote understanding. Collaborating with organizations such as the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, NACO, UNDP, and the National Institute of Social Defense will strengthen NNTP's advocacy efforts and ensure that the voices of transgender individuals are heard.
By engaging with policymakers and participating in relevant forums, NNTP aims to influence policy decisions and ensure that transgender rights are prioritized.
To effectively carry out these initiatives, NNTP requires adequate funding. We are seeking financial support to:
-
Organize meetings and workshops
-
Conduct sensitization programs
-
Provide technical assistance to CBOs
-
Advocate for policy change
With your support, NNTP can continue to be a driving force in advancing transgender rights and creating a more inclusive and equitable society for all.

Self-Help Groups for Livelihood and Sustainability
While significant progress has been made in recent years, transgender individuals in India continue to face significant challenges in accessing livelihood opportunities and achieving economic independence. The formation of Self-Help Groups (SHGs) can be a powerful tool to address these challenges and empower transgender communities.
Through our initiatives, we have successfully established 17 SHGs across India with 20 CBOs from our network. These SHGs have demonstrated their sustainability and potential to create economic opportunities for transgender individuals.
In Tamil Nadu, a transgender-led SHG has successfully launched a saree business using the initial capital provided by NNTP. However, the group now requires additional funding to market their products and expand their operations.
To further empower transgender communities, NNTP aims to establish 80 more transgender-specific SHGs across India. This expansion will require funding for:
-
SHG Formation: Providing initial capital and resources to support the formation of new SHGs.
-
Capacity Building: Offering training and support to SHG members in areas such as business management, financial literacy, and marketing.
-
Livelihood Opportunities: Identifying and facilitating access to suitable livelihood activities for SHGs.
-
Technical Skills Support: Providing technical assistance and expertise in areas such as product development, design, and quality control.
By addressing these needs, NNTP can help transgender individuals achieve economic independence, break free from the cycle of poverty, and contribute to the overall development of their communities.

Mental health intervention for Transgender community
Transgender individuals in India face a disproportionate burden of mental health challenges, often stemming from societal stigma, discrimination, and limited access to healthcare. While physical health concerns are increasingly addressed, mental health remains a neglected area. This neglect can lead to severe consequences, including depression, anxiety, and increased risk of suicide.
To address this critical issue, NNTP seeks to:
-
Provide training and resources to CBOs to enhance their capacity to deliver mental health services and support to transgender communities.
-
Ensure that transgender individuals have access to a range of mental health services, including counseling, therapy, and support groups.
-
Foster inclusive and safe spaces where transgender individuals can receive mental health support, share experiences, and build a sense of belonging.
Through our mental health initiatives, NNTP is committed to transforming the lives of transgender individuals in India. Your support will help reduce rates of depression, anxiety, and suicidal ideation, create safe and inclusive spaces, challenge stigma and discrimination, and empower transgender individuals to lead fulfilling lives.
